Extension & Learning Support

At Central Coast Grammar School we believe every child is unique and has strengths and weaknesses that need to be identified and nurtured throughout their educational journey. Meeting every child’s individual learning needs is absolutely central to our mission.

CCGS Extension and Learning Support

Learning Support at CCGS operates across K-12 and draws on the expertise of specialist staff who work with teachers to monitor each student’s core learning as they journey through school, offering support or extension where needed.

How do we extend and support learners?

Our programs encompass both remediation for those who require it and extension for gifted and talented students. It’s all about focusing on individual learning needs.

  • Individual pathways

Some children need more encouragement than others to ultimately achieve their full potential. Others thrive within an enriched curriculum that supports their talents. We endeavour to create individual pathways for students to ensure their educational experience is challenging and comprehensive.
  • Specialist Learning Support Staff

Our specialist Learning Support staff ensures the highest quality educational experiences within an academically rigorous curriculum. They offer inclusive support and extension within the classroom setting.
  • Extension

In Year 7, CCGS differentiates the curriculum by offering Mathematics extension classes. In Year 8, students with higher abilities can broaden their educational experience through extension classes in English, Mathematics and Science.  Targeted Year 7 and Year 8 students are invited to participate in Independent Learning Projects with the Head of Learning Support to facilitate higher order thinking. Eligible students can take advantage of further opportunities in a range of external competitions designed for advanced children including Tournament of Minds, Brain Bee Challenge, Future Problem Solving Program and the Knox da Vinci Decathlon.
  • Collaborative approach

Learning Support is delivered through collaborative teaching with class teachers. The Learning Support Team targets remedial needs, extension needs and gifted and talented needs. Staff utilise collaborative planning, team teaching and small group interventions within programs to deliver support in the classroom.
  • Adaptability

As each student’s educational landscape broadens they need to feel secure in the knowledge that support is available. A child might feel confident in their learning through Junior School, but struggle in their early teens or in crossing the threshold in Senior College.
