Recently, we were delighted to welcome Central Coast Grammar School alumni and Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP, back to our campus for a wide-ranging Q&A session with our Year 6 students that covered important topics like democracy, leadership and public service.
During the session, Dr Reid shared reflections on his own journey from student to medical practitioner and parliamentarian, and offered an engaging and authentic perspective on civic life, community leadership, and the importance of being wise contributors to society.
Our students were both curious and engaged with the topics they have been exploring in class, and gained insight into the way Parliament works, how thoughtful decisions are made, and the day-to-day realities of political life.
The visit itself came about thanks to the courage and agency of our Year 6 Citizenship Leader and student, Ryan.
Having been inspired by his visit to our nation’s capital in Term 1, Ryan took the initiative to contact Dr Reid’s office regarding a follow-up visit that could connect their classroom learning with real-world experience.
Experiences such as these enrich student learning by moving beyond textbooks and giving our young people access to the very people and institutions that shape our democracy.
We are grateful to Dr Reid for taking the time to visit our Year 6 students, and for encouraging them to think critically about the nature of good citizenship and the role they can play in guiding Australia’s future.
