OUR STEM PROGRAMS

Innovation in action

From Junior School through to Senior College, our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Programs inspire students to explore, question and create.

Here, they develop the skills and confidence they need to tackle complex problems and imagine new possibilities.

• Aeronautical

  Year 3 to Year 12

  The Aeronautical program provides students with practical opportunities to explore the science, technology and engineering of flight. Through hands-on activities, students develop an understanding of aerodynamics, aircraft design, flight systems and emerging aviation technologies.

  The Junior Program explores flight through aircraft and glider design, flight simulation, rocketry and aviation-related engineering projects. Through these experiences, students build capabilities in STEM, systems thinking and innovation while exploring pathways into aviation, aerospace engineering, drone technology and related industries.

  A key component of the Senior Program is the use of drones, enabling students to develop skills in safe operation, flight planning, navigation, aerial imaging and autonomous systems.

  Students learn about relevant safety requirements and responsible drone use while applying problem-solving, teamwork and technical skills in authentic challenges.

• Future Transport

  Year 3 to Year 12

  The Future Transport program challenges students to explore how people and goods can move more efficiently, safely and sustainably. Through hands-on vehicle design and construction, students investigate the science and engineering behind motion, energy, aerodynamics, materials and mechanical systems.

  As students progress through the program, they move from simple transport challenges to designing, building and testing increasingly sophisticated vehicles, including pushcarts, human-powered vehicles and energy-efficient vehicles. Along the way, they develop skills in design thinking, fabrication, teamwork, testing and performance analysis, with opportunities to apply their learning in authentic competition settings such as Energy Breakthrough.

  The stream is designed to build practical engineering capability and an understanding of emerging transport technologies, while encouraging students to think creatively about the future of mobility.

• Design and Engineering

  Year 1 to Year 12

  The Design and Engineering STEM Program gives students the opportunity to turn ideas into practical solutions through designing, making, testing and improving.

  Students explore how structures, mechanisms, materials and manufacturing processes work, then apply this knowledge to increasingly complex engineering challenges.

  Across the program, students develop skills in problem-solving, prototyping, CAD, fabrication and iterative design while working individually and in teams. As they progress, they move from guided construction challenges to sophisticated engineering projects that require testing, analysis and optimisation.

  The stream is designed to build creativity, technical confidence and an understanding of the engineering design process, preparing students to tackle authentic problems and communicate their solutions with confidence.

• Environment and Sustainability

  Year 1 to Year 12

  The Environment and Sustainability STEM Program gives students the opportunity to explore how science, technology and design can be used to understand, protect and improve the world around us.

  Through practical projects in areas such as biodiversity, food systems, recycling, renewable energy and sustainability, students will investigate real environmental challenges and develop solutions that can make a difference within the School and wider community.

  As students progress through the stream, they move from observing and caring for local environments to analysing complex systems, designing sustainable solutions and leading environmental action projects.

  The program combines hands-on learning, field experiences and collaborative problem-solving, helping students build the knowledge, skills and confidence to become thoughtful and innovative environmental leaders.

• Planes, Trains and Automobiles

  Year 1 and Year 2

  In Year 1 and Year 2, the Planes, Trains and Automobiles STEM Program introduces students to the exciting world of transport through hands-on exploration, designing, building and testing.

  Across the year, students investigate four different modes of transport—Automobiles, Trains, Planes and Boats—while discovering the science and engineering concepts that make each one move.

  Students explore ideas such as wheels and axles, friction, forces, balance, lift, buoyancy and simple mechanisms through practical challenges and creative design tasks.

  Each term provides a new transport focus, giving students the opportunity to build, test, compare and improve their designs.

  The program is designed to develop curiosity, problem-solving and early engineering thinking, while giving students a broad and engaging introduction to the transport concepts that lead into the Future Transport and Aeronautical pathways in later years.

• Kindy STEM Program

  Kindergarten

  The Kindy STEM Program gives Kindergarten students a playful, hands-on introduction to STEM through curiosity, exploration and problem-solving. Beginning in Semester 2, students can experience two engaging taster streams that introduce them to the ways scientists, engineers and designers investigate ideas and create solutions.

  In Term 3, students explore Robotics and Engineering, using simple coding, movement, building and testing activities to develop early computational thinking and design skills.

  In Term 4, the focus is on the Environment and Transport, where students investigate plants, soil, water, weather and living things through practical garden and sustainability experiences and then undertake a movement based design challenge.

  The program is designed to build confidence, creativity and a love of discovery, while giving students a strong foundation for the broader STEM pathways they can explore from Year 1 onwards.
