Music
Developing discipline, creativity and a true love of music.
OUR MUSIC PROGRAM
Individual expression,
lifelong confidence
Music truly enriches the Central Coast Grammar School experience, fostering lifelong creativity, resilience and confidence, and supporting our students’ cognitive development in ways that extend beyond the classroom.
With a program taught by specialist teachers, co-curricular music education is available to every student, from their earliest years right through to Senior College.
Every student participates in a full instrumental program from Years 3 – 6.
Our talented students can join our popular ensembles, bands and choirs, which fosters teamwork, communication, and a sense of belonging, as they work together toward the joy of a shared performance.
Our professional-level facilities ensure our musicians have access to everything they need, right from the very start of their musical journey.
Our world-class, purpose-built Performing Arts Centre includes:
- Specialist music education classrooms
- A fully equipped recording studio
- Well-appointed tutorial rooms
- A 750-seat auditorium for performances, complete with hydraulic orchestra pit.
Compulsory Music Curriculum
Every student participates in a full instrumental program from Year 3 – 6.
- In Year 3, all students learn an orchestral string instrument: violin, viola, cello or double bass. They begin in small tutorial groups matched to their experience, then progress into graded ensembles with peers of similar ability.
- During Year 4, our students may continue their string instrument or move into the Concert Band program. They can choose to learn the flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, bass guitar, or percussion.
- Throughout Years 5 and 6, students use contemporary digital technology to arrange and compose music. Singing, tuned and untuned percussion, movement and their own instruments are combined to create group and individual performances, often reflecting classroom themes.
Music beyond the classroom
We offer students the opportunity to extend their musical skills and passions through private tuition and a wide range of ensembles, including:
- Choirs: The Infants and Junior Choirs nurture young voices and performance confidence.
- Strings: The Junior String Ensemble builds ensemble skills, while the Extension Strings Ensemble caters for advanced Year 3 players.
- Band: The Junior Concert Band brings together woodwind, brass and percussion players, with Band Extension Ensemble supporting advanced Year 4 musicians.
- Percussion: The Junior Percussion Ensemble introduces tuned and untuned instruments, teaching rhythm, improvisation and ensemble skills.
- Guitar: The Junior Guitar Ensemble develops reading, ensemble playing and musicianship.
With over 300 students also enrolled in private lessons each week, and thanks to the support of over 25 experienced, professional tutors, music is a vibrant part of daily life at our School.
HSC Music Electives
As students move into their Senior College years, they can choose to study Music 1 or Music 2 for the HSC, while continuing to participate in over 15 co-curricular ensembles, public performances, workshops and international tours.
