Human beings are natural storytellers, and we use stories to understand ourselves, communicate our hopes and dreams, and make sense of our wider world. Storytelling allows us to share our ideas, explore different perspectives, and connect with one another – whether it’s across generations, cultures or communities.
On Friday 28 August, we celebrated the prolific storytellers in our School at our inaugural Humanities and Creative Arts Breakfast – a newly created event that aims to share and showcase the stories and storytelling that make us who we are, both as people and as a community.
The Breakfast was an opportunity for us to shine a spotlight on some of the exceptional work being done by our students in this space, and hear from storytellers from across our student body and broader School community.
Hosted by students Eli and Bethan, our 2026 Middle School Academic Portfolio Captains, the event commenced with a Welcome to Country and Storytelling from Aunty Tammy Wright, our Elder in Residence.
Attendees were then treated to readings from Esther, Beau, and Lily – members of our Writer’s Room Club co-curricular – and Drew from our English Extension 2 class, before viewing the incredible work that has been done by our Year 10 History Elective students in their project on Jack the Ripper.
In their introduction to the day, students Eli and Bethan spoke on the importance of storytelling throughout human history, noting that it “can be considered one of the vehicles through which our knowledge of human history is structured and curated. Before writing was even invented, history was passed on through oral tradition. Today, many historians refer to stories told by people from the time to gather knowledge and infer what their life may have been like.”
Every day, we are immersed in stories as they are told to us and as we tell them to others; they play a rich part of our learning across our School subjects and co-curricular activities, through our social connections, and in the places where we find our individual passions.
