Recently, our School joined in the celebrations for Wear It Purple Day: an opportunity for our students and staff to celebrate our diversity, show our support for LGBTQIA+SB young people, and reaffirm our commitment to creating a School community where every individual feels safe, valued and respected.
Students from our Senior School marked the occasion by wearing purple accessories or painting their fingernails purple in a simple-yet-visible expression of support and solidarity, and during lunchtime, students also gathered to learn more about allyship, access information and support, and paint a nail for themselves or a friend.
In an address to our assembly, student Henry noted that: “The theme for this year’s event is ‘Colours of Courage’. Courage is not just expressed in big moments, but in everyday choices to live proudly and invite others into understanding, acceptance, and celebration.
“Together as a School community, we can build a culture of respect, curiosity, and inclusivity. What might seem like an insignificant action, such as wearing a purple nail or purple accessory, can have a bigger impact than you can imagine.”
In celebrating the ‘Colours of Courage’, we are reminded that true courage can be found in speaking up, showing kindness, challenging assumptions, and having the confidence to be your whole self.
This year’s Wear It Purple Day encouraged important conversations about diversity, inclusion and equity, and was a reminder that a sense of belonging is something we can all contribute to by the ways in which we support and stand alongside one another.
