At Central Coast Grammar School, our students’ global perspectives are shaped not only by what they study, but by the people, places and cultures they encounter. Through an extensive suite of international exchanges, cultural tours and service programs, students gain invaluable firsthand insight into diverse cultures and traditions, and a deeper understanding of their place in the wider world.
Every year, our campus becomes a hub for young people from across the globe, with our Reciprocal Exchange Program considered one of the hallmark experiences at School.
As children grow into young adults, one of the greatest shifts they make is from dependence towards independence, and the Exchange Program supports our students to build self-reliance and resilience by living with an exchange partner and their family overseas, attending school with them, and welcoming them back into their own home and community.
A total of twenty-eight students from our School will be participating in this year’s program, with many already opening their homes and hearts to exchange students from Japan, the United States, Canada, Germany, Ireland and France.
The Program itself continues to grow too, with the School’s Coordinator International Programs, Ms Clare MacLeod, noting that new opportunities are being created for students to experience the world through authentic cultural exchange.
“This year marks the beginning of a new chapter in our School’s long-standing partnership with Beijing Jingyuan High School, with one of our students heading to China on the first exchange to the country.
“This initial exchange will be one-way, with a view to our School also hosting a student from Beijing next year.”
When asked about their visit to their exchange partner’s home country, our students themselves noted that the excitement lay as much in the everyday moments as in the destination itself: one student was looking forward to “spending time with my exchange partner and getting to see a new culture”, while another was eager to “try their clubs and new activities”.
Of course, our students are equally as enthusiastic about sharing a taste of home, with another planning to “bring over some Milo, Vegemite and Furry Friends chocolates for them to try!”
This exchange of perspectives is not confined to our campus, either. Throughout the year, students travel throughout Australia and across the globe in the pursuit of experiences that combine learning with service and adventure.
During the Term 2 school holidays, groups of our students explored Japan through a rich cultural and educational Study Tour, travelled to Cambodia as part of the School’s long-standing service program to help build homes for families in need, and experienced the Great Barrier Reef as a living classroom that deepened their understanding of both the natural world and their place within it.
In October, our students will also collaborate with peers from around the world to explore global issues at the International Round Square Conference at Barker College, and later this year, students and staff will travel to Milingimbi Island in the Northern Territory to immerse themselves in one of Australia’s most significant Indigenous communities.
Finally, our European Cultural Study Tour will take students to the places where history was made, immersing them in the art, architecture, culture and traditions that have shaped Europe and the wider world.
Just as our students travel the globe, the world’s best also often finds its way to our doorstep.
In September, we are proud to be welcoming one of international rugby’s most respected teams to our fields, with South Africa’s rugby team, the Springboks, choosing our School as a training base in the lead-up to its future international campaigns.
During this time, our students will have the opportunity to engage with players and share insights into our respective cultures, demonstrating that a global education is shaped not only by the places we travel, but by the people and perspectives we encounter along the way.
While each of these experiences is unique, they share a common purpose: to encourage our students to seek joyful adventure and fresh perspectives, and discover not only the richness of the world around them, but the compassion and good character within themselves.
